Nearly two million Ukrainian refugees are in Poland.
America’s ambassador to Poland has called for “injections of cash” to help non-governmental organizations assist Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Poland for shelter from Russian aggression. Ambassador Mark Brezenski said NGOs such as Polish Humanitarian Action have operated generously but that they “need money to support the continuity of that generosity, particularly as capacity is tested.”
Recent United Nations data shows that over half of the nearly four million refugees who have fled Ukraine since the start of the conflict are in Poland alone, straining that nation’s resources and economy. Refugees need critical services upon their arrival to Poland—food, water, hygiene products, as well as medical treatment for conflict-related injuries and ailments that can no longer be treated in Ukraine.
The ambassador stated that the timeline for Ukrainians in Poland to return to their homeland remains uncertain. “We have to assume that this crisis will be enduring, perhaps into the long term,” he said.
